42 companies and 17 organizations participate in BIO Washington 2011 with Biocat

Biocat, for the fifth consecutive year, headed up the Catalan delegation to the BIO International Convention 2011, the benchmark international meeting of the biotechnology sector that took place from 27 to 30 June in Washington (United States). Biocat’s aims, to promote Catalan participation with actions geared towards local companies and organizations, international delegations and Catalan researchers in the area, to drive competitiveness, strengthen international links and attract talent to the sector, were met and surpassed.

The extensive representation from the Catalan BioRegion—a delegation of 42 companies and 17 organizations, which made up 50% of the total Spanish representation— projected an image of Catalonia as an ideal setting for research and innovative business initiatives in the life sciences. The event also allowed participants to strengthen bonds with collaborating bodies, like Johns Hopkins University, which co-hosted the Catalan reception at BIO and organized a visit to the John Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore) for members of the Catalan delegation.

The International Case Studies track of the scientific program for the convention included a session entitled Spain’s R&D Facilities, the Driving Force of an Innovation System, featuring Biocat CEO Montserrat Vendrell.

This event, which is the main international showcase for biotech and pharma, brought together more than 15,000 delegates from nearly 1,700 companies from 48 American states and 65 countries, which participated in more than 21,000 scheduled meetings to find new partners for developing products, investors or companies that want to buy their patents or license their products.

Catalan presence at BIO received ample media coverage (TV3, Catalunya Ràdio, EFE, La Vanguardia, Expansión, among others).
