ICSD becomes B·Debate to boost its international scientific debates

B·Debate-International Center for Scientific Debate Barcelona —prior to 2012 under the brand International Center for Scientific Debate (ICSD)— is an initiative of Biocat with support from the “la Caixa” Foundation, whose main aim is to drive top-notch international scientific events to promote dialog, collaboration and the open exchange of ideas, initiatives and knowledge among experts of nationally and internationally renowned prestige. B·Debate promotes advanced debate on the multiple disciplines that are interwoven in the area of the life sciences and their social repercussions, contributing to Catalonia’s position as a country of scientific excellence.

The B·Debate program combines closed debates for specialists, workshops open to the Catalan scientific community and sessions open to the general public in order to raise awareness and promote social participation in scientific debate.

In 2011, B·Debate held a total of 11 scientific debates with 20 scientific and social organizations. Compared to 2010, results went from 3 to 11 debates, from 155 to 278 speakers and from 275 to 1,604 invited guests. At the same time, the team heading up this initiative —Miquel Martí, director of B·Debate, and Laia Arnal, project manager for the center— worked to create a new brand image and launch the www.bdebate.org website, which has become a benchmark in frontier science in Catalonia.
